halt - Shutdown

The halt command is used to shut down the system. After using halt, you need to manually turn off the main power of the computer. The halt -p command, on the other hand, will automatically power off the system after shutting it down. In most distributions, only the superuser or root user can execute the halt command.

The main difference between halt and the shutdown command is that shutdown is a multifunctional command. It can be used to schedule system shutdowns, control system power, and send shutdown notifications to logged-in users. In contrast, halt only performs the shutdown function.

Example:
# halt -p ← Shuts down the system and powers off
